Proper Care for Youth Sports Equipment by Laurell P

Sports equipment and apparel for a child can be a major investment. Parents want to provide their child the best equipment they can reasonably afford. To make the most of your investment, don’t neglect proper cleaning and care. Following are some tips to keep your shoes, rackets, clubs and other equipment at their peak condition.

1.Proper fit is essential. Equipment that fits poorly at the beginning will not only deteriorate faster, but it will also put your athlete at greater risk for injury. If you aren’t sure how to find the proper fit for a specific item, ask for help.

2.Break your equipment in, correctly. All leather soccer cleats can be molded to the player’s feet by soaking them in water and then allowing them to air dry. Baseball mitts can be softened using glove oil. Next, form a pocket for the baseball by wrapping the glove around a ball and then tying it shut with shoelaces, leather band, etc. Most equipment that is worn on the body requires some form of â€breaking in.†Following the correct process will allow the item to both fit and perform better in game situations.

3.Clean dirt off immediately after each use. Dirt, mud, grass and other contaminants are easiest to remove from football footwear immediately after the game. This same principle applies baseball bats, golf clubs or any other items used outside. Dirt left on some surfaces will not only harden and become more difficult to remove, but the components of the dirt like sand can cause etching or physical damage to equipment. Keep a brush or towel handy and use it before equipment is packed away.
4.Let items air dry. Sports equipment gets wet †whether from melted ice from the rink, damp turf from the field or just sweat, equipment is often stuffed into bags before it has a chance to dry. Hockey and figure skate blades will rust if not allowed to dry. Soft equipment will smell musty or develop mildew, and even hard equipment will show wear if not allowed to air out and dry after use. Gym bags are helpful for transporting equipment to and from the game, but make it a practice to pull equipment out afterwards †make sure it is clean and in good repair and then let it air dry thoroughly before the next use.

5. Washing and drying sports attire and equipment using the wash machine is usually not a good idea. Read manufacturer labels carefully before attempting either. In most cases, the best option is to have the items dry cleaned from a sports outfitter who knows how to handle such items, or if necessary handwash them and allow items to air dry. Keep all leather items away from heated surfaces, or they will crack and suffer permanent damage.

Finally, fix small issues early. Even something as simple as a worn lace can fail during competition and result in poor performance and possible injury. Keep your sports equipment in good condition. The effort will pay off in better performance, better safety and fewer replacement purchases in the future.
