Fastpitch softball has been a popular pastime for a very long time, but when the sport was entered into the 1996 World Olympics things really became more competitive and the technology of the equipment improved. Aluminum bats will usually surpass composite bats when it comes to durabilityâ"but they will always have the weakness that in order to be as lightweight as the composites, the walls of the aluminum bat will need to be so thin and therefore will easily dent in cold weather or with wet balls. But nowadays the aluminum bats rarely outperform composites. Why is this? For the most part it has to do with swing weight, and the distribution of weight along the shaft of the bat, which is called the balance point. A bat with a lower balance pointâ"that is weight distributed further from the end cap than the handleâ"will always swing with more speed than a bat of equal weight and length. For a typical paler who needs a lighter bat to maintain control, this distribution of weight will make a harder hit than otherwise.
Just about all manufacturers make popular models of composite fastpitch softball bats. DeMarini has a very popular CF4 model, which is supposed to be made of a composite that is 22% stronger than competitors with a technology that uses double and vertical reinforcement weave fibers.
